Potica (Croatian Nut Roll)
Ingredients
Instructions
-
In a small bowl, dissolve yeast and 1 tablespoon of sugar in warm milk. Let it sit for 5 minutes until foamy.
-
In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, remaining sugar, and salt. Make a well in the center and pour in the yeast mixture, melted butter, and egg yolks. Mix until a soft dough forms.
-
Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 5 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour.
-
In a separate bowl, mix together the chopped walnuts, brown sugar, ground cinnamon, melted butter, and vanilla extract.
-
Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a baking sheet.
-
Roll out the dough into a rectangle about 1/4 inch thick. Spread the walnut filling evenly over the dough, leaving a small border around the edges.
-
Starting from one long side, tightly roll up the dough into a log. Place the rolled dough onto the prepared baking sheet, seam side down.
-
Bake for 30 minutes or until golden brown.
-
Remove from the oven and let it cool for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
-
Serve sliced and enjoy!
