Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, and salt.

Cut the cold butter into small cubes and add it to the dry ingredients. Use your fingertips or a pastry cutter to cut the butter into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs.

In a separate bowl, whisk together the milk, vanilla extract, and egg. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined.

Transfer the dough onto a lightly floured surface and gently knead it a few times until it comes together. Be careful not to overwork the dough.

Pat the dough into a circle about 1 inch (5 cm) thick. Use a round cookie cutter or a glass to cut out small scones.

Place the scones onto the prepared baking sheet and bake for 12-15 minutes, or until they are golden brown.
