Marble cake gets its name from the marbled appearance it gets when the vanilla and chocolate batters are swirled together before baking.

  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C/160°C fan/gas mark Grease and line a 900g/2lb loaf tin with baking parchment.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, cream together the butter and caster sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Beat in the eggs, one at a time, adding a spoonful of flour with each addition to prevent curdling.
  4. Fold in the remaining flour, then stir in the milk until smooth.
  5. Divide the mixture in half. Stir the cocoa powder into one half and the vanilla extract into the other half.
  6. Spoon alternate dollops of the vanilla and chocolate mixtures into the prepared tin. Use a skewer or knife to gently swirl the mixtures together to create a marbled effect.
  7. Bake in the preheated oven for 50-60 minutes, or until a skewer inserted into the center comes out clean.
  8. Remove from the oven and allow to cool in the tin for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  9. Once cooled, slice and serve.
