Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x13-inch baking pan.

In a large bowl, cream together the butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until smooth. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract.

In a separate bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture and mix well. Stir in the chocolate chips and chopped nuts, if desired.

Spread the batter evenly into the prepared baking pan. Bake for 12-15 minutes or until the edges are set and the center is slightly soft.

Remove from the oven and let it cool in the pan for 30 minutes. Cut into bars and serve.
