Heat butter in a large pot over medium heat. Add onions and cook until caramelized, about 30 minutes.

Sprinkle flour over the onions and stir well. Cook for another 2 minutes.

Pour in the beef broth and white wine. Bring to a simmer and cook for 20 minutes.

Meanwhile, preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Slice the baguette and toast in the oven until crispy.

Ladle the soup into oven-safe bowls. Top each bowl with a slice of toasted baguette and sprinkle with grated Gruyere cheese.

Place the bowls on a baking sheet and broil in the oven until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
