  1. Preheat the oven to 325°F (165°C) and grease a 9-inch (23 cm) round cake pan.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  3. In a separate large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  4. Beat in the eggs, one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract.
  5. Gradually add the flour mixture to the butter mixture, alternating with the milk, beginning and ending with the flour mixture.
  6. Fold in the dried fruits, nuts, and candied cherries.
  7. Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan and smooth the top.
  8. Bake for 60-70 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  9. Remove from the oven and let cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  10. Once cooled, wrap the fruitcake tightly in plastic wrap and let it rest at room temperature for at least 2 hours, or overnight.
