Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, cinnamon, ginger, cloves, and salt. Set aside.

In a large bowl, cream together softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add molasses and egg, and mix until well combined.

Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined.

Roll the dough into small balls, about 1 inch in diameter. Roll each ball in granulated sugar to coat.
