  1. Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C).
  2. In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
  3. Cut in the butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. In a separate bowl, beat the egg, vanilla extract, and milk together.
  5. Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, stirring just until combined.
  6. Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead gently for about 1 minute.
  7. Roll out the dough to about 1/2-inch (1 cm) thickness.
  8. Cut out rounds using a biscuit cutter or a glass.
  9. Place the rounds onto a baking sheet and bake for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown.
  10. Remove from the oven and allow to cool for 10 minutes.
  11. Split the shortcakes in half horizontally.
  12. Top the bottom halves with whipped cream and sliced strawberries.
  13. Place the top halves on the strawberries.
  14. Dust with powdered sugar and serve.
