Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). In a large bowl, combine the cornmeal, flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar.

Cut the butter into small pieces and add it to the dry ingredients. Use your fingers or a pastry cutter to mix the butter into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs.

In a separate bowl, whisk together the milk and egg. Pour the milk mixture into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined.

Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead it gently a few times until it comes together. Pat the dough into a circle about 1 inch thick.

Cut the dough into 8 wedges and transfer them to a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
