M&Ms were first introduced in 1941 and were originally made for soldiers as a convenient and easy-to-carry snack during World War II.

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line a baking dish with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, cream together the butter, brown sugar, and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Beat in the egg and vanilla extract.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined.
  5. Fold in the M&Ms.
  6. Spread the batter evenly into the prepared baking dish.
  7. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the edges are golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  8. Allow the bars to cool in the pan for 30 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  9. Once cooled, cut into squares and serve.
