Shortbread originated in Scotland and is traditionally made with just three ingredients: butter, sugar, and flour.

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, and salt.
  3. Cut the unsalted butter into small pieces and add it to the dry ingredients.
  4. Using your hands or a pastry blender, mix the butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  5. Add the maple syrup and vanilla extract to the mixture and mix until the dough comes together.
  6. Press the dough into a greased 9-inch (23cm) round baking pan.
  7. Bake in the preheated oven for 20 minutes or until the edges are lightly golden.
  8. Remove from the oven and let it cool in the pan for 10 minutes.
  9. Cut into wedges or squares while still warm.
  10. Allow the shortbread to cool completely before serving.
