In a large bowl, mix together the sour cream, melted butter, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper.

Layer half of the sliced potatoes in the crockpot, followed by half of the diced onion and half of the shredded cheddar cheese.

Pour half of the sour cream mixture over the layers.

Repeat the layers with the remaining potatoes, onion, cheese, and sour cream mixture.

Cover the crockpot and cook on low for 4 hours or until the potatoes are tender.
