Chocolate chip cookies were invented by Ruth Graves Wakefield in 1938 when she ran out of baker’s chocolate and substituted it with chopped up semi-sweet chocolate.

  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In a separate large bowl, cream together the softened butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until light and fluffy. Add the egg and vanilla extract, and mix until well combined.
  4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. Fold in the chocolate chips and dried cherries.
  5. Drop rounded tablespoons of dough onto the prepared baking sheet, spacing them about 2 inches apart.
  6. Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until the edges are set and the centers are slightly soft. Remove from the oven and let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.
