  1. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until smooth. Beat in the egg and vanilla extract.
  2. In a separate bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture and mix well.
  3. Divide the dough in half and shape each half into a disk. Wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.
  4. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). On a lightly floured surface, roll out the dough to about 1/4 inch thickness. Cut into desired shapes using cookie cutters.
  5. Place the cut-out cookies on ungreased baking sheets and bake for 8-10 minutes or until the edges are lightly golden. Remove from the oven and let cool on the baking sheets for 5 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.
  6. In a small bowl, whisk together the icing sugar, milk, and corn syrup until smooth. If desired, divide the icing into separate bowls and add food coloring. Decorate the cooled cookies with the icing.
