Cornbread is a traditional Southern dish that dates back to Native American cuisine. It became popular during the Civil War when wheat flour was scarce in the South.

Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Grease a 9-inch square baking dish.

In a large bowl, combine the cornmeal, flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar.

In a separate bowl, whisk together the buttermilk, eggs, and melted butter.

Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined.

Fold in the diced jalapeno peppers and cheddar cheese.

Pour the batter into the prepared baking dish and smooth the top.

Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
