In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, yeast, and salt.

Add the butter, milk, and egg to the dry ingredients. Mix until a dough forms.

Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 5 minutes, until smooth and elastic.

Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.

Punch down the dough and roll it out to a 1/2-inch thickness.

Cut out circles using a doughnut cutter or a round cookie cutter.

Heat vegetable oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 375°F (190°C).

Fry the cronuts for about 2 minutes on each side, until golden brown.

Remove from the oil and let them cool on a wire rack.

Dust with powdered sugar before serving.
