  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Slice the bananas and set aside.
  3. Arrange a layer of vanilla wafers in a baking dish.
  4. In a saucepan, mix sugar, flour, and salt. Gradually stir in milk.
  5. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens and comes to a boil.
  6. Remove from heat. In a separate bowl, beat the egg yolks.
  7. Gradually stir about 1/4 of the hot mixture into the beaten egg yolks, then add the egg yolk mixture to the remaining hot mixture.
  8. Cook for 2 more minutes, stirring constantly. Remove from heat and stir in butter and vanilla extract.
  9. Layer half of the sliced bananas over the vanilla wafers, then pour half of the pudding mixture over the bananas.
  10. Repeat the layers with the remaining vanilla wafers, bananas, and pudding mixture.
  11. Bake for 10 minutes, or until lightly browned.
  12. Remove from the oven and let it cool for 2 hours.
  13. Once cooled, refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight.
  14. Serve chilled with whipped cream on top.
