  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F). Grease and flour a square baking pan.
  2. In a heatproof bowl, melt the dark chocolate and butter together over a pan of simmering water. Stir until smooth and remove from heat.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the granulated sugar and eggs until pale and fluffy.
  4. In another bowl, sift together the all-purpose flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, and salt.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the egg mixture, alternating with the milk. Mix until just combined.
  6. Fold in the melted chocolate mixture and vanilla extract.
  7. Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan and smooth the top.
  8. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  9. Remove from the oven and let cool in the pan for 10 minutes. Then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  10. Once cooled, cut the cake into small squares or rectangles.
  11. In a small bowl, sift the powdered sugar. Roll each petit four in the powdered sugar until fully coated.
