Chocolate chip cookies were invented by Ruth Graves Wakefield in 1938. She added chopped up bits from a Nestlé semi-sweet chocolate bar into a cookie recipe.

In a mixing bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.

Add the egg and vanilla extract, and mix well.

In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.

Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and mix until well combined.

Divide the dough in half. Leave one half plain and mix the cocoa powder into the other half.

Fold in the chocolate chips into both doughs.

Roll each dough into a log shape and wrap in plastic wrap. Chill in the refrigerator for 30 minutes.

Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Slice the chilled dough logs into 1/2-inch thick rounds and place them on the prepared baking sheet.

Bake for 10-12 minutes or until the edges are golden brown.

Remove from the oven and let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
