  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F) and grease a baking pan.
  2. Melt the butter and dark chocolate in a heatproof bowl over a pan of simmering water.
  3. In a separate bowl, mix together the sugar, eggs, and vanilla extract.
  4. Gradually add the melted chocolate mixture to the sugar mixture, stirring well.
  5. In another bowl, sift together the all-purpose flour, cocoa powder, and salt.
  6. Add the dry ingredients to the chocolate mixture and mix until well combined.
  7. If desired, fold in the walnuts.
  8. Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan and spread it evenly.
  9. Bake for approximately 25 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out with moist crumbs.
  10. Allow the brownies to cool in the pan for 30 minutes before cutting into squares.
