Earth apples, also known as Jerusalem artichokes, are not actually related to apples or artichokes. They are a type of sunflower root vegetable with a nutty flavor.

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9-inch tart pan.
  2. In a large bowl, mix together the flour, sugar, butter, eggs, cinnamon, baking powder, and salt until well combined.
  3. In a separate bowl, toss the sliced earth apples with lemon juice.
  4. Spread half of the batter evenly into the prepared tart pan.
  5. Layer the sliced earth apples on top of the batter.
  6. Spread the remaining batter over the earth apples.
  7. Bake in the preheated oven for 45 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  8. Allow the torte to cool in the pan for 15 minutes, then remove from the pan and transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  9. Dust with powdered sugar before serving.
