  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F). Grease a round cake pan.
  2. In a heatproof bowl, melt the dark chocolate and butter together over a pan of simmering water.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the sugar and eggs until pale and fluffy.
  4. Gradually add the melted chocolate mixture to the egg mixture, stirring well after each addition.
  5. Sift in the flour and cocoa powder, and fold gently until just combined.
  6. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  7. Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan and smooth the top.
  8. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out with a few moist crumbs.
  9. Remove from the oven and let it cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  10. Once cooled, spread whipped cream over the top of the cake and sprinkle with chocolate shavings.
  11. Let the cake rest for at least 1 hour before serving.
