Date squares are a popular Canadian dessert, also known as matrimonial cake.

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x9-inch baking dish.
  2. In a saucepan, combine dates and 1 cup of water. Cook over medium heat until thickened, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat and set aside.
  3. In a large bowl, cream together butter and brown sugar. Mix in oats, flour, baking soda, and salt until crumbly.
  4. Press half of the oat mixture into the bottom of the prepared baking dish. Spread the date mixture evenly over the crust. Sprinkle the remaining oat mixture on top.
  5. Bake for 30 to 40 minutes, or until golden brown. Allow to cool before cutting into squares.
  6. Serve and enjoy!
