In a large pot, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the onion and garlic, and cook until softened.

Add the broccoli and vegetable broth to the pot. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 15-20 minutes, or until the broccoli is tender.

Using a blender or immersion blender, blend the soup until smooth.

Return the soup to the pot and stir in the heavy cream. Season with salt and black pepper.

Cook for an additional 5 minutes, until heated through.
