Meringues were originally created in Switzerland and were named after the village of Meiringen.

Preheat the oven to 225°F (110°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

In a clean mixing bowl, beat the egg whites until soft peaks form.

Gradually add the sugar, cocoa powder, vanilla extract, and salt while continuing to beat until stiff peaks form.

Gently fold in the dark chocolate chips.

Using a piping bag or spoon, drop dollops of the meringue mixture onto the prepared baking sheet.

Bake for 5 hours, then turn off the oven and let the meringues cool in the oven for 30 minutes.

Remove from the oven and let them cool completely before serving.
