Creme Brulee is a classic French dessert that originated in the 17th century. Its name literally translates to ‘burnt cream’ due to the caramelized sugar topping.

  1. Preheat the oven to 325°F (165°C).
  2. In a mixing bowl, whisk together the egg yolks and sugar until well combined.
  3. Add the vanilla extract and heavy cream to the egg mixture and whisk until smooth.
  4. Pour the mixture into individual ramekins.
  5. Place the ramekins in a baking dish and fill the dish with hot water until it reaches halfway up the sides of the ramekins.
  6. Bake in the preheated oven for 30 minutes or until the custard is set.
  7. Remove the ramekins from the water bath and let them cool to room temperature.
  8. Refrigerate the custards for at least 2 hours or overnight.
  9. Just before serving, sprinkle a thin layer of granulated sugar over the custards.
  10. Caramelize the sugar using a kitchen torch or by placing the ramekins under the broiler until the sugar melts and turns golden brown.
  11. Let the caramelized sugar harden for a few minutes before serving.
