Cranberries are native to North America and were used by Native Americans for their medicinal properties before becoming a popular ingredient in cooking.

Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a muffin tin or line with paper liners.

In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.

In another bowl, mix together the melted butter, brown sugar, eggs, mashed yam, milk, and vanilla extract.

Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined. Fold in the fresh cranberries.

Divide the batter evenly among the muffin cups.

Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Allow the muffins to cool in the tin for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
