The first chocolate truffle was created in France in the 19th century and was named after the truffle fungus because of its similar appearance.

In a bowl, mix the chocolate cookie crumbs and melted butter. Press the mixture into the bottom of a pie dish.

In a saucepan, heat the heavy cream until it just begins to boil. Remove from heat and pour over the chocolate chips. Let it sit for a minute, then stir until smooth. Stir in the vanilla extract.

Pour the chocolate mixture over the crust in the pie dish. Smooth the top with a spatula.

Refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or until set.

Before serving, top with whipped cream and sprinkle with chocolate shavings.
