The first chocolate sandwich cookie was introduced in 1912 by the National Biscuit Company, now known as Nabisco, and was named ‘Oreo’.

  1. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  2. Beat in the egg and vanilla extract.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt.
  4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined.
  5. Stir in the milk to form a soft dough.
  6. Divide the dough in half and shape each half into a disk. Wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
  7. Preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  8. Roll out one disk of dough on a lightly floured surface to about 1/4 inch (6 mm) thickness.
  9. Use a round cookie cutter to cut out cookies and place them on the prepared baking sheet.
  10. Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until the edges are set.
  11. Remove from the oven and let cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  12. Repeat with the remaining dough.
  13. In a small bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract to make the filling.
  14. Spread a spoonful of filling onto the bottom side of half of the cookies, then top with another cookie to make a sandwich.
  15. Serve and enjoy!
