Maraschino cherries were originally made from sour marasca cherries preserved in maraschino liqueur, but today they are typically made from sweet cherries preserved in a sugar syrup.

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).

In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt.

In a separate large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.

Beat in the egg and vanilla extract.

Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined.

Roll the dough into 1-inch balls and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

Press a cherry half into the center of each dough ball.

In a small saucepan, melt the chocolate chips and sweetened condensed milk over low heat, stirring until smooth.

Spoon a small amount of the chocolate mixture over each cherry, covering it completely.

Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until the cookies are set.

Allow the cookies to cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.
