Chocolate chip cookies were invented by Ruth Graves Wakefield in 1938 when she added chopped up chocolate to her cookie dough, expecting the chocolate to melt and create chocolate cookies. Instead, the chocolate stayed in chunks and the chocolate chip cookie was born.

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a baking pan.
  2. In a large bowl, cream together the butter, brown sugar, and granulated sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the egg and vanilla extract.
  3. In a separate bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing well. Stir in the chocolate chips.
  4. Spread the batter evenly into the prepared baking pan. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the edges are golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  5. Remove from the oven and let cool in the pan for 30 minutes before cutting into bars.
