  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line a baking dish.
  2. In a mixing bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract.
  4. In a separate bowl, combine the flour and baking powder. Gradually add this mixture to the butter mixture, alternating with the milk.
  5. Spread half of the batter into the prepared baking dish. Arrange the cherries on top, then spoon the remaining batter over the cherries.
  6. Bake for 30 minutes or until golden brown. Allow to cool in the dish for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  7. Once cooled, dust with powdered sugar before serving.
