Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a baking dish.

In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.

In a large bowl, cream together the butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the egg, milk, and vanilla extract.

Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. Stir in the poppy seeds.

Spread half of the batter into the prepared baking dish. Arrange the cherry halves on top, then spoon the remaining batter over the cherries.

Bake for 25 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Allow the twinks to cool in the dish for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Dust with powdered sugar before serving.
