Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x9-inch (23x23 cm) baking dish.

In a mixing bowl, cream together the butter and brown sugar until smooth.

In a separate bowl, combine the flour, rolled oats, baking soda, and salt.

Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture, mixing well after each addition.

Press half of the oat mixture into the bottom of the prepared baking dish.

Pour the caramel sauce evenly over the oat mixture.

Sprinkle the chocolate chips and chopped nuts (if using) over the caramel sauce.

Crumble the remaining oat mixture over the top.

Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown.

Allow to cool in the baking dish for 30 minutes before cutting into squares.
