Caramel apples were invented by a Kraft Foods employee named Dan Walker in the 1950s.

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).

Peel, core, and slice the apples.

In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, granulated sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Mix well.

In a separate bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, brown sugar, and rolled oats. Cut in the butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

Spread half of the apple mixture in a greased baking dish. Drizzle half of the caramel sauce over the apples. Sprinkle half of the crumb mixture over the caramel.

Repeat the layers with the remaining ingredients.

Bake for 35-40 minutes, or until the apples are tender and the topping is golden brown.

Allow to cool for 10 minutes before serving. Serve with additional caramel sauce, if desired.
