Candy corn, the iconic Halloween candy, was invented in the 1880s by George Renninger of the Wunderle Candy Company.

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a muffin tin with cupcake liners.

In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.

In a separate large bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.

Beat in the egg and vanilla extract until well combined.

Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with the milk. Mix until just combined.

Add orange food coloring to one bowl, yellow food coloring to another, and leave the third bowl plain.

Spoon the batter into the cupcake liners in layers, starting with the orange, then yellow, and finally the plain batter.
