  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F) and grease a baking dish.
  2. In a saucepan, melt the butter over low heat. Remove from heat and stir in the sugar until well combined.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk the eggs and vanilla extract. Add this mixture to the butter and sugar mixture, stirring well.
  4. Sift in the cocoa powder, all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt. Mix until just combined.
  5. If desired, fold in the walnuts.
  6. Pour the batter into the prepared baking dish and smooth the top.
  7. Bake for approximately 25 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out with a few moist crumbs.
  8. Remove from the oven and let cool in the baking dish for 30 minutes.
  9. Cut into squares and serve.
