Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x13-inch baking pan.

In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, granulated sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt. Cut in the butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

In a separate bowl, beat the egg and vanilla extract. Add the egg mixture to the flour mixture and mix well.

Set aside 1 cup of the dough. Press the remaining dough into the prepared baking pan.
