  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch round cake pan.
  2. In a medium bowl, mash the ripe bananas with a fork until smooth.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  4. In a large bowl, cream together the unsalted butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract.
  5. Gradually mix in the mashed bananas.
  6. Alternate adding the dry ingredients and buttermilk to the banana mixture, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients.
  7. Fold in the chopped walnuts.
  8. Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan and smooth the top.
  9. Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
