Banana bread became popular in the United States during the Great Depression when resourceful housewives found creative ways to use overripe bananas.

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease four 8-ounce mason jars.
  2. In a medium bowl, mash the bananas until smooth.
  3. In a separate large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
  4. In another bowl, mix together the melted butter and sugar until well combined. Add the egg and vanilla extract, and mix until smooth.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. Fold in the mashed bananas and chopped walnuts.
  6. Divide the batter evenly among the prepared mason jars, filling each about 2/3 full.
  7. Place the jars on a baking sheet and bake for 35-40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  8. Remove from the oven and let cool for 10 minutes. Serve warm or at room temperature.
