Peel and core the apples, then cut each apple into quarters.

Roll out the puff pastry sheet and cut it into four equal squares.

In a small bowl, mix together the brown sugar and cinnamon.

Place an apple quarter in the center of each puff pastry square.

Sprinkle the brown sugar-cinnamon mixture over the apple quarters.

Add a small piece of butter and a few drops of vanilla extract on top of each apple quarter.

Fold the corners of the puff pastry squares towards the center, covering the apple completely.

Place the dumplings on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

In a small saucepan, heat the water and remaining brown sugar until the sugar dissolves.

Pour the sugar syrup over the dumplings.
