The chocolate chip cookie was invented by Ruth Graves Wakefield in 1938 when she added chopped up bits of a chocolate bar into cookie dough, expecting the chocolate to melt and create an all-chocolate cookie. Instead, the chocolate bits held their shape, and the chocolate chip cookie was born!

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In a large bowl, cream together the melted butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until well combined. Beat in the egg and vanilla extract.
  4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. Stir in the chocolate chips and chopped nuts, if using.
  5. Drop rounded tablespoons of dough onto the prepared baking sheet, spacing them about 2 inches apart.
  6. Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until the edges are golden brown. Remove from the oven and let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.
