Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).

In a medium saucepan, combine the sugar, cornstarch, and salt. Gradually whisk in the milk.

Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens and comes to a boil.

Remove from heat. In a separate bowl, beat the egg yolks. Gradually whisk in about 1 cup of the hot milk mixture.

Pour the egg mixture back into the saucepan and cook over low heat, stirring constantly, for 2 minutes.

Remove from heat and stir in the butter and vanilla extract.

Layer the vanilla wafers and sliced bananas in a baking dish. Pour the pudding mixture over the layers.

Bake for 10 minutes.

Remove from the oven and let cool for 2 hours.

Top with whipped cream and garnish with banana slices before serving.
