  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9-inch round cake pan.
  2. Peel, core, and thinly slice the apples.
  3. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, cinnamon, and salt.
  4. In a separate large bowl, cream together the butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  5. Gradually add the flour mixture to the butter mixture, alternating with the milk. Begin and end with the flour mixture.
  6. Spread half of the batter into the prepared cake pan. Arrange half of the apple slices on top. Repeat with the remaining batter and apple slices.
  7. Bake for 35-40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  8. Allow the cake to cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  9. Dust with powdered sugar before serving, if desired.
