Toffee bars are believed to have originated in England in the early 19th century and were traditionally made with butter, sugar, and treacle.

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish.

In a large mixing bowl, cream together the butter and brown sugar until light and fluffy. Add the eggs and vanilla extract, and mix well.

In a separate bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture, mixing until well combined.

Spread the batter evenly into the prepared baking dish. If desired, sprinkle chopped nuts and chocolate chips on top.

Bake for 25 minutes, or until the edges are golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Remove from the oven and let cool in the baking dish for 30 minutes. Cut into bars and serve.
