In a medium saucepan, combine the sugar, butter, heavy cream, vanilla extract, and salt.

Continue to cook, stirring occasionally, until the mixture reaches 248°F (120°C) on a candy thermometer.

Remove the saucepan from the heat and let it cool for 5 minutes.

Pour the caramel mixture into a greased 8x8-inch baking dish.

Let the caramels cool at room temperature for 1 hour.

Cut into squares and wrap each caramel in wax paper.
