  1. Preheat the oven to 220°C (425°F) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the wholemeal flour, all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt.
  3. Cut the unsalted butter into small pieces and add it to the flour mixture. Use your fingertips to rub the butter into the flour until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs.
  4. Chop the dates into small pieces and add them to the flour mixture.
  5. In a separate bowl, whisk together the milk, honey, and egg.
  6. Pour the milk mixture into the flour mixture and stir until just combined.
  7. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead it gently until it comes together.
  8. Pat the dough into a 2cm (3/4 inch) thick round and use a round cutter to cut out scones.
  9. Place the scones onto the prepared baking sheet and brush the tops with a little milk.
  10. Bake for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown.
  11. Remove from the oven and allow to cool slightly before serving.
