  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch round cake pan.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
  3. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract. Gradually mix in the dry ingredients alternately with the sour cream. Fold in the chopped apples.
  4. Spread half of the batter into the prepared cake pan. Sprinkle with half of the brown sugar and half of the chopped walnuts. Repeat layers with the remaining batter, brown sugar, and walnuts.
  5. Bake for 40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Allow to cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then remove from the pan and cool completely on a wire rack.
