  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9-inch round cake pan.
  2. Peel and slice the pears, removing the cores.
  3. Arrange the pear slices in the bottom of the cake pan.
  4. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, ginger, cinnamon, cloves, baking powder, and salt.
  5. In a separate large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  6. Beat in the egg, molasses, milk, and vanilla extract.
  7. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined.
  8. Pour the batter over the pears in the cake pan.
  9. Bake for 35-40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  10. Allow the cake to cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then invert onto a serving plate.
  11. Serve warm with whipped cream.
