Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9-inch round cake pan.

In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the brown sugar and stir until melted and smooth. Pour the mixture into the prepared cake pan.

Arrange the cranberries and sliced apples on top of the sugar mixture.

In a mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.

In a separate bowl, cream together the granulated sugar and softened butter until light and fluffy. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.

Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with the milk. Mix until just combined.

Pour the batter over the cranberries and apples in the cake pan.

Bake for 40-45 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
